Understanding our students' learning of computer science: Cultural situatedness and the interplay between theory and practice

Learning and teaching computer science is a demonstrated to be a difficult task. In this talk we will discuss research projects from
UpCERG  at Uppsala University, Sweden, aiming to explore aspects on how students learn and understand computer science. The ultimate aim of these projects is pragmatic: We, as teachers, should better understand how students learn computer science, so that we teach for good learning.

One project explores how computer science is culturally situated. We here study how Chinese students, studying computer science in Uppsala, change their perception of the discipline per se, by studying and living in Sweden. In a long term project we have studied how students learn concepts in computer science, how they learn the practical skills, and how these two interplay in the learning process. The project has lead to questions on how and why hands-on is beneficial for learning to program, which we plan to study using brain imaging.

During the seminar, we will also give an overview of other research tracks in UpCERG, with the aim of encouraging a discussion and promoting a future collaboration between our research groups.

Dr. Anders Berglund is a researcher in computer science education and a senior lecturer in computer science. His research interests focus on how students, in different cultural, social and contextual setting learn and understand computer science, for which he mainly uses qualitative, experiential empirically based research methods. His insights in students' learning of computer science is applied in developmental projects, both in Sweden and internationally.

Dr. Anna Eckerdal is a researcher in computer science education and a senior lecturer in computer science. Her research interests focus on how novice students learn to program, how students learn and understand threshold concepts and software design, and how academics perceive MOOCs. Eckerdal has mainly used qualitative, empirically based research methods. Eckerdal's results have been used as inspiration for classroom development as well as for spring boards for new research.
